6UDPlus is a high-performance carbide grade developed for drawing steel cord fine wires. The unique formulation combines an ultrafine cemented carbide with special additives to maximize corrosion resistance and hardness without compromising toughness, providing the wire drawing die with magnificent wear resistance.

This premium wire drawing grade developed and patented by Hyperion Materials & Technologies is top-of-the-market-quality.  Dies manufactured of grade 6UDPlus provide optimal performance when producing saw, tire cord, welding, and ultra-tensile wires. Designed for more demanding applications with more substantial efficiency and longevity, dies made of grade 6UDPlus allow machines to run longer batches of wire and perform efficiently by delivering considerably less die consumption than most wet drawing grades.

  1. What die geometries are available in grade 6UDPlus? Is there any limitation to the sizes?
    Die blanks made of grade 6UDPlus are available in various standard geometries such as ISO, JIS, and DIN or tailor-made to your design. However, despite no size limitation, Hyperion recommends using grade 6UDPlus in die blanks with bore sizes below 3 mm for the wet drawing process only.

  2. For which applications is grade 6UDPlus exhibiting the best drawing performance?
    Grade 6UDPlus has been developed for wet drawing steel cord fine wires. Some examples of proven applications are saw wire, tire cord, welding wire, and ultra-tensile wires.

  3. Are there significant changes to the die finishing process required when using grade 6UDPlus vs. conventional carbide grades?
    As a cemented carbide grade, wire drawing blanks and dies made of grade 6UDPlus can be finished with the same process parameters as conventional carbides. Toolmakers can use the same diamond compounds and machinery used for conventional carbide grades.

  4. Can I mix dies of grade 6UDPlus with those of conventional carbide grades in a wet drawing line?
    After the first drawing dies of grade 6UDPlus, it is not recommended to introduce any softer material. Grade 6UDPlus has a superior hardness compared to any conventional 6% cobalt ultrafine grade or 3% cobalt extra fine grade. Dies of softer carbide grades will oversize faster than 6UDPlus dies, leading to an unstable drawing process. For consistent and superior drawing stability, all drawing dies should have the same carbide grade.
